When I started a fitness business I wish I had searched for Yelp Advertising Reviews before I bought into their propaganda!
The problem was, I was new to the business and I wanted to succeed.
When you start a business, you need to have a to do list for marketing.
This includes putting a free listing on:
Or anywhere you can find without paying for it.
However, when you do this for Yelp or YP, you will get a call from an “account manager”. And when that call comes in, you can absolutely listen to the person and get some great marketing ideas.
If I were to do it again, I would pass on their AD offer.
yelp advertising reviews: The Pros
Yelp is a fantastic platform for reviews, especially for the consumer. Their business is exploding and many people go to yelp before google to read reviews on:
- Local attractions
They pretty much have a niche for every business out there. I even use it to find what other business are in my local two block radius.
So, in that sense it is great! I can find what I am looking for easily and they point me in the right direction.
When it comes to advertising, all they can do is control what is on yelp. So, if the person you are trying to reach is not
on yelp, then you will be hard pressed to reach them. But that is not only a challenge with yelp, it is the hard truth on
all advertising platforms.
Choose carefully! If you decide to do paid advertising for your Fitness Business, there are several options and I believe the one with the best return is probably looking at you in the mirror.
yelp advertising reviews: The Cons
First of all, anytime you are considering advertising and you are an small independent business owner, READ THE FINE PRINT!
Yelp, YP, or Newspapers are huge companies and they didn’t get that way on accident. They have smooth sales people and they will only highlight the positives of their program.
From my experience, here are the cons of their advertising:
- They a $1000 cancellation fee
- Their programs have a minimum commitment of 12 months
- Their programs are more expensive than other options (like Facebook)
When I jumped into this program, I spent over $1700 for two months of advertising that sent not one buyer or prospect my way. In retrospect, I could have spent a third of that on my local paper or with Facebook with the same results.
The problem for me was emotion. When you are a new business owner you want to succeed so badly that you want every thing to work, and the logic part of you is a little less silent than it needs to be.
So, anytime there is a big financial decision that needs to be made:
- Step back
- Take a breath
- Wait 24 hours
If it is a good deal then it will be there the next day.
Yelp Advertising Reviews: My Review
Although yelp advertising works great for:
- Big gyms with big budgets
I have found that for the little guy with a small independent business, the ROI (Return on investment) fell short.
Keep your yelp free listing and maximize all the free listings as possible. When it comes to reviews, yelp does have a
algorithm that limits some of your reviews.
If you have a client that leaves you a positive review, but isn’t a avid yelper, it may not even show up or may get bumped to a hidden page.
If that is the case maximize all of your review options:
- yelp reviews
- Google Reviews
- Facebook Fan Page Reviews
Personally, I have picked up new clients from my Free Yelp Listing, my business website, and personal referrals. Although yelp is a great place for reviews, it’s not the only place!!
