What is the best workout drink?
If you want to get an extra boost before you exercise think twice about taking a pre-workout!
Pre-workout shakes are popular, but are mostly packed with enough caffine to get you through a weekend bender in Vegas. No thanks, I’m good!!
I stay clear of taking a ton of supplements and stick to just a few:
- An awesome tasting protein shake
- A great fish oil, and multivitamin
…and a great BCAA!
BCAA’s are branch chain amino acids or for the laymen, low calorie protein. To keep it simple, BCAA’s are important for muscle recovery and will support your workouts. You get them in your protein shake, but if you want a little more pump to go with your Pandora station; here are my recommendations.
What is the best workout drink? BCAA’s
If you get a plain BCAA, beware it will taste like you are licking the chalk off a schoolyard playground. That is why finding one that tastes good and fits your fancy.
Look for a product that has a 2:1:1 ratio of the essential branched chain amino acids: L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine and L-Valine. When you find that, find a flavor you like at a price you want to pay.
Personally I stick in the $25-$30 range and don’t get much more because I like to change up my flavors.
Also, some have caffine and some don’t if you want an extra kick. I stay away from extra caffine so I don’t become an unnecessary chatty Cathy!
Here are some great choices:

This one tastes great and has glutamine support (muscle recovery support). That helps all of your sore muscles from your killer workout!
BPI makes some great products and I like their BCAA performance. They have the perfect ratios and their price point is spot on. In my experience I just didn’t find a flavor I loved. That’s why I stick to Optimum Nutrition.
These are definately my top picks when it comes to supplementing my workouts. If you are just trying to stay fit and healthy and get a little more than the standard H20, I highly recommend one of these BCAA’s.
You don’t need to get jacked on caffeine to get a great workout! Find a great BCAA like one of these listed above, and take it during your workout. A scoop is enough and if you hit the jackpot of flavor, you will be singing in the gym (or rain if your prefer).
I love the orange flavors, but some like the fruit punch or grape. Again, just stay away from plain!
Don’t forget, keep a good protein shake and multivitamin to help give you body its proper nutrients and muscle support. Branch Chain Amino Acid’s are great, but they work so much better when they have friends helping them!
