The health benefits of swimming laps well exceeds the pain of the water, shower, and cold. As I turned 40 I decided to go over the different ways I could get fit and get healthy. Trust me, the health benefits of swimming laps is the best option to getting fit over 40 or when you start to notice the aches and pains associated with exercise.
Personally, I was never a runner. As I got older I looked for ways to get fit and add some cardio to my exercise regimen. Although, I do like cycling, swimming is by far easier and less of a pain.
What do I mean by swimming being less of a pain? Well, when it comes to exercise we all can come up with a ton of excuses of why not to get in shape.
These three factors are big hitters when it comes to choosing a exercise program that works best for you.
Why Swimming Laps is Easy Peasy
Lets break down a few popular routines to compare:
Running – Put shoes on and out the door and you are off! The drawbacks:
It is harsh on the your body and bones
Over time you body will deteriorate faster
Biking – Great in the summer when you have time to set aside a path and plan. Better on the joints than running. Drawbacks: Bike expense, plus when you get on the bike and go you have about a 20 minute prep time.
Swimming – Find a pool, hop in, and start swimming. The only real drawbacks are planning for a post swim shower, and you will get used to that after a few weeks.
Overall, the health benefits of swimming laps far outweighs the rest! It is easier to get started in a program, it is the king of whole body workouts, and the water takes the stress off the bones and joints.
So, when you are looking for a program to get fit over 40 or just want a program that is easy on the body and gives you a full cardiovascular workout, choose Swimming!
