Why should I start a fitness business? This one reason is why all good trainers go out on their own.
When I started my career in fitness, I sucked it up and started working for a big corporate gym. And the reason I say
sucked it up is because fitness was my way out of the corporate world.
I believe that fitness industry is the best possible business because you have the ultimate client relationship. Think
about it, what other business can you spend a few hours a week with your client on a one-on-one basis? Not to mention, when they leave your meeting, they are happier than when they arrived.
So, when I escaped the corporate grips of ‘the man’, I traded it in for the same grip…only this time it was wearing gym shorts.
Looking back, the big box gym was sort of a hazing for a great career in fitness.
- How to work with different client needs
- How to work in a busy atmosphere
- How to train people with almost no equipment
- How to be versatile and adjust on the fly
And as much as I learned from the big gym, they were also the one’s that pushed me to start a fitness business.
Why should I start a fitness business?
If you like the corporate structure of a big gym or corporate studio, then maybe that is where you will find the most
success. But, if that big box gym pisses you off, then usually that will be the reason why you should start a fitness
Lately I have been talking to trainers that are on their own and had once previously worked for a corporate fitness empire.
There is one thing that is consistent regarding their departures:
The Man pushed them out the door!
Not literally, but with some it was their only choice.
Here is how it can happen to you:
- Cancelling your bootcamp or team training
- Giving your clients or commissions to other trainers (for no reason)
- Sandbagging clients and forgetting about you
- Forcing you to sign a non compete clause
However it happens, believe me, it will happen and its just a matter of time!
If you know that you want to stay in the fitness business and create a solid career, start putting together a business plan. And I’m not talking about a huge impossible dissertation with your mission statment, and life long dreams. Put a couple things down on paper to get you started.
Here a few things that you will need:
- Get Certifed as Personal Trainer
- A place to train
Yeah that’s pretty much it! When you are already working at a corporate gym, you will already be certified and may or may not have liability insurance. If you do, then you are one step ahead of the game.
All you really need to do is find a place to pay rent and train your clients. 10 solid clients will be the minimum you will need to start a fitness business.
Think about it: If 1 client trains 2x a week at a $65 session rate, that is $520 a month. So, if you have 10 of those you can start a fitness business bringing in over 5k a month. Not to shabby working 20 hours a week!
Based on those 10 clients, are you making that kind of cash at the big gym? Keep in mind you will have about $10 per session in expenses, but still are you clearing that much per month?
If the answer is no, then maybe it is time to start a fitness business!
Don’t get caught up in the Details
When you realize are ready to go for it and move your clients to a private studio, don’t waste time on time wasters!
For example, when you are setting your rates keep it simple. Charge one flat rate for your sessions and don’t get caught up in multi package rate discounts. Your clients are coming to train with you because of you and not because of any discounts. If they want a discount, they can go to Walmart Personal Training!

I started my fitness business on January 1st! The perfect time to get new clients excited about training specials and getting in shape for the new year. If I was to do it again, I would consider a few fitness trends:

- Getting in Shape for the summer
These are the perfect time to start a business off right! Don’t start in the slow time of the year and expect your business to be booming. Start when the industry is running wild!
