Being a successful Personal Trainer is more than getting certified!
If you are just starting out in the fitness world you may be wondering, how to be a successful personal trainer.
Just like many industries, Personal Training has more than one facet. You may start as a one-on-one Personal Trainer and expand your expertise to other areas like:
- Semi-Private Personal Training
- Boot Camp Classes
- Group X
- Starting your own Gym
- Yoga or Pilates
- Nutrition Coaching
- Fitness Competitions
All of these are great niche fitness specialties, and whichever direction you choose, be passionate every day!
How To Be A Successful Personal Trainer
When I started in the business, I had over 20 years of strength training, exercise, and sales experience. I was well rounded to become a successful personal trainer, I just need some proper education.
Learning how to become a successful personal trainer takes more work than just becoming a Personal Trainer!
The first step on how to be a successful Personal Trainer is to get certified. Whether you have a ton of experience as I did, you still need to get certified. Personally, I chose my certification based on a trainer at my favorite gym. I am happy that it was the right certification for me, but I don’t suggest that route for newbie trainers.
When you do your research, start thinking of the clientele you want to serve. If you want to be an Athletic Strength and Conditioning Coach, then a Functional Aging Certification may not be the best option for your first certification.
Today, the fitness industry is exploding and if you want to learn how to become a successful Personal Trainer, you should define your specialty.
The most successful Personal Trainer’s:
- Train clients within their own Fitness Niche (weight loss, fitness competitions, functional aging)
- Continue to sharpen their swords (always learning new techiques and being the best at what they do)
- Have a passion for what they do and love to motivate others with that passion
The trainer with the most Fitness Certifications is NOT always the best trainer.
Certifications don’t equal success! It is important that you get certified and understand the process, but a large part of being a successful Personal Trainer depends on your work ethic and ability to connect with your clients.
How To Become A Successful Personal Trainer
Once you are certified and have all of papers (certification, cpr, etc) you will be ready to get a job as a Personal Trainer. With obesity rates increasing, the fitness industry is growing along with it! Most likely you will be able to get a job as a Personal Trainer right away.
And that is what I did. I started right away at a big box gym! I wanted this to be my career and wanted to be a successful Personal Trainer.
I had a great attitude, hit the gym floor running, and built up a great clientele. As with any career it is what you make of it. I focused all my energy on my clients and it showed with my client success, progress, and all the referrals I kept getting. It was amazing!
To become a successful Personal Trainer, you should set you goal to be in the business for a lifetime. If that is your goal, then its time to think multi dimensional…
As a Personal Trainer, I have multiple training platforms:
- I train clients in a Private Studio
- I train clients in their home
- I have an online training program
- I have a fitness blog that helps me get more clients
- I have a product shop that gives me a referral commission of fitness products
How to become a successful personal trainer? Multiple Training Platforms! Or as I call them, multiple income streams.
How to be a successful Personal Trainer is more than the workout. To be successful, and build a career in fitness, it will help to think outside the gym and expand your practice. Get great at what you do and plant your seeds. Once your fitness crops start to grow, you will have an amazing harvest for years to come.
