Getting fit after 40 is not a path I chose, getting fit after 40 is the path that chose me!
It has always been my goal to eat right, stay in shape, and just be all around healthy. But let’s face it, I have a full time business, a demanding family, and don’t forget about all the yard work.
With all that getting in the way, it is hard to prepare meals, stay health conscious, or try keep up with my workouts to look like Ryan Gosling.
But, when I turned 40 my body need more attention than it did when I was 20. Aside from keeping a healthy diet, I need to spend more time stretching (anything more than zero time is a plus), and hold myself accountable to get in a good workout every day.
Why Getting Fit after 40 Matters
As a trainer I meet more and more people that ask me health questions about getting in shape and eating right. And that is good, because it matters to them. But how many people out there need to get in shape, but don’t make any conscious effort at all.
Last weekend, my wife and I took a fantastic vacation to Moab,Utah. It was definitely a bucket list trip that you should do once in your life time. There were tons of hikes everywhere with breathtaking views that were not very challenging. At most the hikes were less than .25 of a mile.
And there were parents, grandparents, and kids everywhere! Even with some of these short hikes, there were people standing at the front waiting for their family because they couldn’t go!
Why? Were they in wheelchairs? Were they lazy? Absolutely not….they were overweight. And I am not talking about, I need to lose 20lbs overweight, I’m talking over 100 lbs overweight!
It was hard for me to see this! To me, not being able to walk a quarter mile to see some of the most spectacular views in the world would be motivation enough to start to get in shape.
And I am not putting someone like this down, I am just here to say, don’t let getting fit after 40 hold you back no matter how big or small you goal might be!
Some of the people I have me have trouble setting goals like:
- I need to lose weight
- I’m tired of feeling so bad (Trust me, I have been here)
- I don’t like not being able to play with my kids
However, needing to lose weight is not a good enough goal! Seeing the life experiences missed by an overweight person is heartbreaking. I felt so sad for the people at the bottom of these hikes missing out on wonderful experiences due to poor diet and exercise.
How the Downward Spiral begins
I found in my personal experience and the experience of many people I meet, having kids is wonderful, but can also cause an unhealthy lifestyle.
When you have kids, you may feel more pressure to:
- Provide for your family
- Get stressed at work
- Take care of them first
- Leave no time for yourself
- Make lots of excuses
Then when you kids are grown and move away, you are left with an unhealthy lifestyle. If you are lucky you can stop the downward spiral before your kids are grown. But for many people, getting fit after 40 is their chance to make a change!
Making a Change
If you know that you are headed down a unhealthy path, then you can absolutley make a change. You are in charge of your own destiny.
Make the right choice! Do you want to be sitting at the bottom of Arches National Park waiting for your kids, or do you want to be hiking with them and taking photos rather than looking at the photos they took?
