Do you struggle with trying to get personal training clients? I find that is the biggest challenge of many small personal training businesses. Recently I have noticed a few personal trainers that are in rock solid shape struggling to get clients and frustrated when they see some ‘not so fit’ trainers with a full book of business.
And why is that? How can people want to train with a ‘fat’ trainer and not with me?
Well, let’s look at this in a different light…
Have you ever noticed in the NFL that a lot of head coaches are overweight coaching some of the finest tuned athletes in the world? I mean really, they have access to the best equipment trainers, and money is obviously not a problem. So why are they so fat when they are in the business of athletic performance?
Simple….the coaches are in the business of planning, the players are in the business of execution.
And the planning phase in the NFL often consists of 18 hour days which is never good for your own health no matter what business you are in.
If you are running a personal training business do you spend time marketing and promoting your business? After all, your business is like your clients weight loss. If you don’t work on it every day, you won’t get results.
5 Simple Tips To Get Personal Training Clients
If you truly want more personal training clients, then go out and get more personal training clients! Here are 5 simple habits that you can work on every day that will lead to long term success.
1 Connect with people
If you are in great shape, standing on the mountain top telling people how fit you are won’t get you new clients. You may actually push people away because they are intimidated by you.
Tip: Find a way to connect with people on a personal level and find out their pain points. Do they struggle with motivation, accountability, or what to do? Once you discover that, see if you can help them.
2 Meet new people
If your only place of meeting people is the gym, find a new place. Although the gym is a good place to meet potential clients, how many people want to go to the gym but are afraid? You need to find those people and they are not there.
Tip: Pick three place to frequent where your potential clients hang out. When I go to Costco I wear my personal trainer shirt and it often times strikes a conversation.
3 Print some flyers
I know people hate flyers and it makes it gets uncomfortable walking into a place and talking to strangers. Look at it this way, do you think your clients are coming into the gym the first time? Well, if you want to experience what they are feeling, get uncomfortable and go talk to people. And just as you tell them, once you get in the habit, you will start to see results.
Tip: Print a simple flyer and pick an area that is close to your gym. Flyer it once a month and get to know the people who work there. Eventually, you will pick up some business.
Avoid hitting the whole city and specialize in one section. Pick an hour a week and do it as long as your schedule allows.
4 Be positive
This may sound simple and a bit elementary, but a smile goes along way. The last time I was talking to a trainer that had no business, I discovered they had a horrible attitude. Almost like they were mad that nobody wanted to train with them.
Tip: Don’t let business lulls get you down. Keep your head up and make fitness fun.

5 Train people for Free!
When you are out meeting new people, invite them to come workout with you for free. Make it sound like a once in a lifetime opportunity and have a ton of fun. Then invite them back for more and tell them to bring a friend.
The goal here is to get them in the door and see what you are all about.
Tip: Have a low bearing offer to get people in and make it hard to pass up! I always have an ongoing special that is hard to pass up that no other trainers offer.
Getting Clients Simplified
To get personal training clients you need to get uncomfortable. You are comfortable in the gym, so get out of it!
Nobody ever did great things without leaving the house!!
These 5 tips to get personal training clients will help you get started at no cost. Remember, if you can do one business building action per day, you will create habits for long term success.
