Does the keto diet work for weight loss? I’m a big believer in experimenting on certain plans before I recommend them to anyone including my clients. Recently I had a client that was struggling with get their diet in line and thought the keto diet may work for them. I don’t normally recommend any sort of diet, but some people need a little more structure and rules for thier life and what they feed themselves.
And based on food intake, habits, body type, and goals I found that the keto diet was almost in line with their current eating habits.
What is the keto diet?
The Keto diet was developed to help diabetics and severly overweight people. The concept is basically eating a high fat diet, some protein, and minimal carbs. Basically your carbs come from veggies and fruit…and that’s it!
If you look at it, the bigger you are the more calories you probably take in. And if you are not exercising or moving during the day, the calories turn to sugar which turns to fat.
Then you crave more of the same crap and your waist line grows like a Maguai in water.
Does the keto diet work?
I took a week in the Keto life to see what if any affect it had. Personally, it was not for me based on my lifestyle, but I also have a pretty clean diet to start and I move a ton during the day.
To dive into this diet I went all in….
I went to Sprouts and picked up some necessary items:
- Cottage cheese
- Peanut butter (let’s face it, PB is always on my shopping list)
- Young har
- Breakfast sausage
- Fruits and veggies
Pretty much anything I could find at the store in the high fat category. For the average person, it is really cutting out any processed carb that is currently in you diet…and no soda!
From there, I was back prepping my breakfast and lunches for the week and handfuls of snacks to get me through the day.
Now, the big kicker of the keto diet is that once you start you have to stay on target! Because you goal it to have your body go into ketosis.
Ketois is when your body doesn’t have enough carbs to burn for energy, it burns fat. There is a litte more science around it, but that’s the basics.
For me and my active life it didn’t work because my body burns the carbs I take in because they are healthy, specific, and complex. However, based on my experience I found that it would be perfect for the person that is trying to lose weight with a big weight loss goal.
Why you ask?
Well, here’s the rundown…
I find that people with a lot of weight to lose have poor diet habits they can’t break, and lose a ton of energy while dieting.
For example, someone who is not eating enough but conscious of what they are eating may have a diet like this…
- Eggs in am
- Salad for lunch
- And fast food for dinner
Here is what that diet looks like when you go Keto…
- Eggs in the am + you mix in some spinach or peppers for carbs add some breakfast sausage for fat and then throw on a slice of Swiss.
- For a snack you are eating cheese sticks plus some cashews or almonds
- You salad lunch is now a salad with a little more cheese, avocado, olive oil for dressing or vinaigrette. Maybe even a high fat blue cheese…along with your bacon and chicken or steak topping.
- Your afternoon snack looks similar to your morning snack, but you evening is different. Now you have a good handle on your energy because of all the fat you have consumed and now Taco Bell is in your rear view mirror.
- Plow another pile of meat with some salad add some healthy fats and fruit
See, the keto diet is not that different than the normal diet except you replaced your empty carbs with tasty fat and you have enough energy to get you though the day.
After a few days of staying on the keto diet, your body will enter ketosis and you will be a fat burning machine! However, this is not a sometimes only diet. Once you are in ketosis, a simple trip to subway plowing some wheat bread will wreck the work you did for the last week!
This diet was designed for people with diabetes, but does work for certain lifestyes and big weight loss goals.
